Snowboarding champion

Kevin Mattice of Sparta, center, earned a gold medal in slopestyle and a silver medal in halfpipe at the United States of America Snowboard Association National Championships in the 18- to 22-year-old male division. Slopestyle combines big air and technical tricks on a course filled with features including rails, hips, tabletops and jumps. Prior to Nationals, he competed in the U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix at Killington and Revolution Tour stops at Boreal, Calif., Sugarloaf, VT and Copper Mountain, Colo. Mattice will graduate May 28 from the Stratton Mountain School in Stratton Mountain, VT, and will attend the School of Engineering at the University of Denver on a merit scholarship.
