Vernon thankful to businesses that helped beautify roads
Vernon On the northwest corner of Routes 515 and 94 where once only cement was visible, plants accent the roadway. Courtesy of a Aspen Companies, Vernon business, this corner of town now supports tall ornamental grasses, lilies and ground cover, and is soon to be transformed into a winter scene. The landscaping company volunteered to manage the site this spring and each season establishes a new garden that can be seen by the thousands of residents and tourists who pass through the intersection. Recognition of the company’s commitment to the betterment of Vernon and their willingness to devote their resources to the project is what brought Vernon’s Mayor Austin Carew and Vernon Beautification Committee members to the site recently. A sign, created by Jim Franko, of Highland Lakes, and hand-painted by Advanced Signs, was erected at the site to acknowledge Aspen. “This is an example of what can be done if people work together in town,” said Sam Lewin, chairperson of Vernon’s Beautification Committee. “Everything you see was done for free. The landscaping and the sign. We have so much to be thankful for in Vernon.” The mayor continued with praise. “We’re pleased to acknowledge Aspen as a true partner in town,” said Carew. “When Ron and Melissa, (the owners of Aspen) heard of our plan to focus on beautifying the town’s main thoroughfares they immediately stepped forward to claim this corner as their own.” The center island on Route 515 is another example of the Beautification Committee’s efforts. The floral arrangement and the sign welcoming visitors to Vernon were established this past spring. The committee is exploring the feasibility of placing solar powered ornamental lighting on the island trees this winter to add a festive air to the corridor. “In the spirit of Thanksgiving, Vernon gratefully acknowledges what Aspen Companies, Jim Franko and Advanced Signs have done to make our town more picturesque. We’re hopeful that Vernon’s other businesses will step forward in the coming year. Together we can make a difference,” said committee chair Lewin.
