Wm Paterson dean gets national award

Wayne - Dr. Glen Sherman, associate vice president and dean of student development at William Paterson University in Wayne, was named the 2008- Outstanding AOD (Alcohol and Other Drugs) Professional by Outside the Classroom, Inc., a Boston-based company that addresses critical health issues affecting education, corporate, and government institutions. Sherman’s “ability to create and sustain collaborative relationships in order to support prevention efforts across campus clearly demonstrates his commitment to creating a healthier, safer campus,” said the letter announcing the award. Sherman was honored recently at the annual Prevention Excellence Reception, held at Seattle’s Space Needle. The Outstanding AOD Professional Award recognizes the exceptional performance of a professional staff member who demonstrates continued commitment to the field of alcohol and other drug prevention in the college, university, or organizational setting. For the past six years, Sherman has spearheaded William Paterson University’s alcohol prevention and intervention efforts. Recognized both regionally and nationally as an expert in the field, Sherman has implemented a comprehensive set of programs, including requiring AlcoholEdu, an online alcohol prevention course to educate students about the consequences of problematic drinking, for all first-year students, and creating a Peer Health Advocates group. Sherman has developed and sustained supportive services for students already struggling with alcohol and other drug addiction. In addition, Sherman applied and received several grants, allowing him to fund substance-free housing options on campus.
