A time to salute

Under blue skies and with a panoramic lake view in the background, Highland Lakes Senior Club members, veterans and community residents acknowledged those who died in uniform, during a morning service on Memorial Day, May 25. The service included a speech by Joyce Logan, president of the Highland Lakes Senior Club, invocation prayers by Father Robert Carroll of Our Lady of Fatima R.C. Church and the Rev. Roger Spence of Christ Community Church in Highland Lakes. The ceremony culminated with the raising of the American flag to full staff and the playing of Taps, which brought Navy veteran (1940-1960) Joseph Carlsen to his feet for a salute. — By Janet Redyke Memorial Day or Decoration Day was first celebrated in 1868 with flowers and flags placed on the graves of Civil War soldiers.
