Asbestos removal closes county office

    Sussex County-In preparation for future renovation to the county's Hall of Records building, the building, located at 4 Park Place in Newton, will be closed for asbestos abatement from Oct. 7 through Oct. 12, with the building scheduled to re-open on Wed., Oct. 13. Both the County Clerk and Surrogate vaults will be closed during the entire abatement process, while services offered by those offices will remain available, but will be relocated as follows: County Clerk's Office: For passport, trade name, and notary services, clerk staff will be available to assist the public at the Administration Building, located at 1 Spring Street in Newton. Also at the Administration Building will be the processing of county IDs, as well as the processing of any incoming realty transfer documents, whether over-the-counter or via regular or expedited mail service. For election-related services, such as absentee ballot applications and voter registration, clerk staff will avail themselves at the county's election board, located at 18 Church St. in Newton. Surrogate Court: The Surrogate's Court will continue offering its services as usual, but will relocate its operation to the Sheriff's Office at 39 High Street in Newton. Calls should be directed to their regular number at 973-579-0920. The public may make use of the drop box outside the Hall of Records building (located on the High Street side of the building) for the deposit of filings, pleadings and correspondence for both the County Clerk and Surrogate.
