SUSSEX — The Sussex County Chamber “Leadership Sussex Youth” program is designed for 11th grade students who have exhibited leadership traits and a commitment to their community. This six session program is based on locally identified needs and designed to create situations for participants to gain knowledge and skills as leaders, said organizers, empowering them to utilize these skills in dealing with issues within the community. According to Chamber President Tammie Horsfield, the program “features a combination of presentations and ‘hands on’ community projects that allow students opportunities to practice and reflect on their experiences and interaction with other participants.” Class projects allow participants to practice their leadership skills while providing a direct benefit to the community. This, according to Horsfield, gives students “a framework for integrating newly acquired skills with “real world” issues.” Young adults who participate in the program gain community participation skills, improve team building strengths and prepare to participate in organizational decision-making. Each of the six sessions allow students to better develop an accurate understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing Sussex County, including available employment opportunities, while interacting with other peers who exhibit similar leadership qualities. Leadership Sussex Youth accepts up to 24 students annually. Candidates must be an 11th grade student in Sussex County, possess a 2.5 GPA or higher, be recommended to the program by a guidance counselor and/or employer and currently hold student leadership positions within his or her school or community. The course of study includes topics in economic development, health and human services, federal, state and local government/public service, environment, tourism, arts, culture and heritage, and agriculture.
