As one retires, another is sworn in for post of first assistant NEWTON — Sussex County First Assistant Prosecutor William F. Fitzgibbons retired on Sept. 1 from the post he’d held since May of 2004. Taking his place, Gregory R. Mueller was sworn in on Sept. 1 as First Assistant Prosecutor of Sussex County by Judge N. Peter Conforti. Mueller had been employed as an assistant prosecutor in Sussex County since October 2005. According to a press release issued by the prosecutor’s office: Since coming to the prosecutor’s office, Mueller has successfully handled numerous high profile cases, including the murder trial of Paul Foglia. The Foglia trial was the first murder trial in Sussex County in approximately 10 years. Mueller also successfully tried an aggravated sexual assault trial, which resulted in the defendant being sentenced to 30 years in prison. Before coming to the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office, Mueller, of Hardyston, was a partner in the law firm of Mueller, Russo and Warmington, P.C., a firm specializing in criminal defense and civil rights representation. He also served as an assistant prosecutor in Morris County, where he worked in the trial, appellate and major crime units. He also worked as a law clerk to New Jersey Superior Court judges Manuel Greenberg and Michael Connor. Mueller graduated cum laude from Duquesne University School of Law in 1995. Prior to law school, he worked as a supervising senior auditor for the accounting firm of KPMG in Short Hills. Prosecutor Weaver indicated that he believes Mueller’s prior experience will enable him to excel in his new position. As he bid farewell to Fitzgibbons, the prosecutor said that he had valued Fitzgibbons’ vast and wide-ranging experience. “Bill Fitzgibbons was an asset to this office and will be missed, both professionally and personally,” Weaver said. Prior to joining the prosecutor’s staff, Fitzgibbons had been in private practice in Franklin for 30 years and represented the County Municipal Utilities Authority for 15 years, as well as various municipalities, boards and agencies. He also served as Vernon’s Municipal Prosecutor for 12 years. Fitzgibbons lives in Ogdensburg.
