Chateau Hathorn opens outdoor patio and gardens on Thursdays
WARWICK, N.y. Spring is in the air and beginning Thursday evening, May 28, and every Thursday afterwards, The Chateau Hathorn Restaurant, 33 Hathorn Road, Warwick, will open its picturesque outdoor patio and gardens to the public from 6:30 - 10 p.m. for a weekly evening of live music, cocktails, wine and beer and hors d’ oeuvres served under the stars. Sandra Zueger, the daughter of Dolph and Helene Zueger, owners of the historic restaurant, believes that the time has come for both young and older people in Warwick to have a favorite spot, at least once each week, where they can enjoy soft music, good food and drinks in a quiet and pleasant atmosphere. Weather permitting the Thursday evening casual affairs will be held outdoors. If not, the Chateau offers its large Victorian Lounge on the second floor of the restaurant as a “rain date” location providing the same musical entertainment, refreshments and good service. The Chateau’s outdoor garden has long been a popular choice for weddings and other important affairs. However Zueger soon realized it was under-utilized when its popularity grew to the extent that people began asking that the outdoor cocktail and appetizer portion of their event be extended. “Our patio and garden area is really beautiful,” said Zueger. “And when you offer live music, not too loud, such as jazz or blues, and pass around terrific hors d’ oeuvres, we know this will be fun and a great spot to get together with your friends or to meet new friends.” The $10 entrance fee includes appetizers and guests will also be able to order from a casual fare menu of reasonably priced items. The outdoor cash bar will also offer a selection of wines by the glass, imported, microbrewery or American beers, soft drinks and designer cocktails. One of the most beautiful landmarks in Warwick, the home of the Chateau Hathorn Restaurant is an authentically furnished 18th century private mansion built in 1832. The Chateau boasts cathedral ceilings, wood carved interiors, a Victorian lounge, picturesque outdoor banquet area and luxurious accommodations along with fine food and wine. The five star restaurant was honored in the prestigious Zagat guide and Wine Spectator. And in Orange County, it was voted “Best” for both ambiance and “Wine List.” The stately elegance, Old World charm and five star rating for its continental cuisine can be traced to owners Dolph and Helene Zueger, both natives of Switzerland. Dolph Zueger, who once cooked for Sophia Loren, was educated in culinary schools in Europe. Not very long after emigrating to the United States, he and his wife, Helene, who was trained in restaurant management, opened the successful Swiss Inn in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. They bought Chateau Hathorn about 26 years ago. Chef Dolph Zueger is not only an artist in the kitchen, he is a talented gardener, carpenter and builder.
