College admission courses available at Community College

Newton — The new SAT is unlike any other exam your child takes in school. The SAT is a four-hour test, more than 170 questions, an essay to write, and penalties for wrong answers. Many students, even honor students, do not score to their potential. In addition, parents play an important role in the college decision process and are in need of information on the admissions process, planning timelines, financial aid basics and more. Sussex County Community College’s Continuing Education program can help. An SAT/PSAT course will be taught by Ray Newman, experienced test prep instructor, and author of “The New SAT/PSAT: Everything in 52 Pages.” A complementary copy will be given to each enrolled student. “2009 Barron’s How to Prepare for the New SAT” is required for this class. The college’s continuing education will offer two sections of the SAT/PSAT course: 6 sessions, 12 hours, on Mondays , Jan. 26 through March 9 (no class on Feb. 16), and another course starting Monday, March 23 and running through April 27. The cost of the course is $300. A basic workshop on college admissions, designed for parents/guardians of tenth and eleventh grade high school students, will also be offered. Parents/guardians will attend one 3-hour session either on March 7 or March 21 at a cost of $35. The workshop is taught by Lynn Janov, College Match LLC.
