Come in, have a seat, stay a while

Sussex-Over the past few years Main Street Sussex has been given a facelift. With paved sidewalks and hanging baskets it presents as pretty a picture as any Main Street in Sussex County. With this in mind lifelong Wantage residents Frank and Carol Bezak chose Main Street for the location of their new business, Just Deserts Café. When the software company that Frank Bezak worked for was downsized and he found himself looking for a new job and possibly a new career and it wasn't until last Thanksgiving evening that he and his wife Carol came up with an idea. "We were sitting around after dinner on Thanksgiving evening and our two daughters told us that they were going to drive 30 miles to go get a latte," said Frank. "That was when we decided that it would be a good idea to open a café here in Sussex where people could come and get a full range of coffees and teas and enjoy them in a relaxing atmosphere," he added. The café has seating for about 24 people in the front of the premises and additional seating in the rear, where there are comfortable couches and armchairs. Customers are encouraged to relax and read the paper or a book. Offering an extensive range of flavored and gourmet coffees, loose leaf teas and a selection of confections, the café is geared toward the person who wants to come in and sit and really enjoy the experience of taking time out of their day for themselves. "We want people to know that we are not a deli," said Carol Bezak. "We do offer bagels and donuts on Sunday mornings, but we want to emphasize that this is a place that is conducive to sitting down and spending time with others or taking time for yourself to read the paper or simply unwind." Just Desserts is a family-owned and operated business. Mary Bezak, Frank and Carol's daughter, is taking a little time off before going on to graduate school to manage the day-to-day operations. "We get a mixed group of customers, and it's nice to see people's faces when they realize that they have found a place where they can find the drinks they want and have a nice place to enjoy them," she said. Betty Martin, who lives in Wantage, has been coming to the café since it opened in May and is delighted with it. "I'm a home-grown Sussex woman, and I am so happy that we finally have a place that is so high class, and I can get a sugar-free latte and sugar-free cheesecake, which is important to me because of medical reasons," she said. The café is open from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. on Monday-Saturday and from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. on Sunday. For more information, call 973-875-1711.
