Chinkchewunska members Wendy Wyman, Jean Zwirek, Kathy Weakland, Patte Frato, Jennifer Brylinski, and Elaine Eberhart recently joined members of the Sussex County Historical Society to honor Civil War surgeon, Levi DeWitt Miller. The program, co-chaired by Patte Frato, a Trustee of SCHS, and Valerie Josephson of Vernon, started on the Newton Town Green with the re-dedication of the Civil War Memorial. Included was a reading of excerpts from the original dedication speech given by Honorable Amos J. Cummings on September 5, 1895. The women then marched, with members of the 27th Regiment New Jersey leading the way, to the Old Newton Cemetery. There they honored Dr. Miller with a prayer by their chaplain, Jean Zwirek, placement of a Civil War marker and American flag, and a gun salute by the 27th Regiment.
