Newton — The Division of Senior Services will hold a food drive on Thursday, Aug. 6, during Senior Day at the New Jersey State Fair, to help stock its food pantry. Visitors who bring donations will have their names entered into a drawing for a $50 WalMart gift card. Suggested food donations include non-perishable milk, juice, tuna, meals in a can, hearty soup, peanut butter and jelly, granola bars, crackers, cereal, macaroni and cheese. Many people do not have access to can openers; therefore, canned food items with pop-top lids are always appreciated. Personal items such as toilet paper, soap and shampoo are always needed as well. Thousands of Sussex County residents visit the food pantry each year and this year in particular, staff has experienced difficulty in keeping the shelves stocked. The pantry operates primarily on donations. To donate cash, call 973-383-3600. Cash donations are used to buy essential food items, such as milk. Those in need of food can stop by the Division of Social Services, 83 Spring St., Newton, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. No appointments are necessary. Food donations are accepted. Call 973-383-3600.
