Food pantry is nearing empty
Newton The Sussex County Division of Social Services food pantry has reached emergency proportions and is desperately in need of help. The Department of Human Services, Division of Social Services provides food to anyone in need; therefore, individuals are not required to meet eligibility requirements or be affiliated with the agency in order to receive this service. Hundreds of families and individuals would go hungry without this vital assistance. The Social Services food pantry operates primarily on donations. The increased demand for food has rendered shelves bare and reinforced the harsh reality of a troubled economy. As the cooler weather approaches, it will create another realm of necessary assistance for many county residents. Items needed for the food pantry include shelf-stable milk, cereal, peanut butter, jelly, crackers, meals in a can, soup, tuna or other proteins in a can. Personal items such as soap, toiletries and personal hygiene products are always needed. Also welcome are cash donations through which perishable food goods or vouchers are purchased as needed. Call the Division of Social Services directly at 973-383-3600 to make a cash donation. Cash donations are used to buy essential food items such as milk for children. If anyone would like to make a donation or is in need of food for themselves, they can stop by the Division of Social Services, 83 Spring St., Suite 203, Newton, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Special arrangements can be made for after-hour donations by calling 973-383-3600.
