Free medication interaction review at Hardyston school
Hardyston The Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy of Rutgers University will provide “brown bag” medication reviews at the Healthy Living Festival for seniors at the Hardyston Middle School on Saturday, Sept. 26 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Event goers are encouraged to bring a bag containing all of their medications in original prescription bottles, any over the counter medications, and any supplements they take such as vitamins, minerals and herbs. Registered pharmacists and pharmacy students, under their supervision, will evaluate the contents of each bag to determine any potential risks/problems that could arise from taking the combinations of medications and supplements. Frequently, individuals self-medicate with over the counter medications or take supplements without their physicians’ knowledge. Also, many seniors see several physicians, with each prescribing various medications, officials said. When compounded by using more than one pharmacy, the risks for medication toxicity and/or negative reactions increase. The Healthy Living Festival includes a variety of free health screenings, informational exhibits and life enrichment opportunities.
