Groundhog Day

Will the groundhog see his shadow on Monday? Folklore says that if a groundhog emerges from his burrow and fails to see his shadow, winter will soon end. On the other hand, if it is sunny and he sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. Groundhogs are also called woodchucks and marmots. One of the most famous is Punxsutawney Phil, celebrated in the film “Groundhog Day.” Groundhog Day is celebrated in both the United States and Canada on Feb. 2. Some sources say that Groundhog Day started as a bit of folk humor — if the groundhog saw its shadow, six more weeks of winter; if not, 42 days more of winter.
