On Saturday, Oct. 17, Harvest House Board of Directors had our Benefit Turkey Dinner in support of Harvest House Soup Kitchen in Sussex Borough. We are grateful to the many people who cooked the turkeys (all 29 of them) and mashed (200 pounds) potatoes and to all those who made the delicious desserts and stuffing (30 pans). There were 339 meals served and a total of $2,071 was raised to support Harvest House Soup Kitchen. Andover Subacute Center, Newton, has for the last 10 turkey dinners donated the rolls, butter and cookies, vegetables and fruit cups, cranberry sauce and plastic ware. The help they have given over the years goes beyond measure. Judy Carls and Pam Sweet have been an amazing help to Harvest House. Kuperus Garden Center in Sussex donated the flowers for the tables. Thanks to the Vernon Township High School, which lets us use the cafeteria for this yearly event. The following is a list of people that have been very instrumental in helping Harvest House: Glenwood and McAfee Post Offices, Midnite Auto Parts in Pine Island, CJ’s Market-Pine Island, Alan Shawn Feinstein Challenge, Good Headz Salon, Hamburg Vet Clinic, Savvy Chic Consignment Boutique in Warwick, Nearly New Consignment, Hauda Ward and her family, who continuously collect clothing for our ongoing clothing drive as far as Newburg, N.Y., A&P of Vernon and Sussex, Hamburg Bagels, Mixing Bowl Deli, Holland American Bakery, Harmony In Motion, St. Francis de Sales Church and many more that donate to Harvest House on a regular basis. We are currently in need of funds to keep the program running. Anyone wishing to donate please send it to P O Box 374, Glenwood, NJ 07418. We have a new contributor: Advanced Self Storage (Robert Van Zile) of Hardyston has donated the use of one of his storage units to hold the clothes that we continue to collect until we can have bins around town. Anyone wishing to contribute clothes, linens, belts, shoes, purses, stuffed animals may call 973-764-0502 for further information. We currently serve 12,000 meals a year and 74 active volunteers who help make the meals daily. Karen Dykenga, our kitchen supervisor, makes a peanut butter and jelly sandwich look like a gourmet meal. It is not easy to come up with a different menu every day but she does and with the help of her mom Gladys Meyer and all the volunteers no one goes away hungry. We would like to thank all the many members of the community and the Board Members who helped to make the dinner a huge success and those who continuously support Harvest House.
