Heritage Society donates historic photo

Those were the days of sleds and two-room schoolhouses in Harydston It was the winter of 1913. Someone snapped a photo of children from the south section of Hardyston Township being delivered by horse and wagon to the two-room school in Stockholm. That keepsake was enlarged and on Jan. 27, members of the Hardyston Heritage Society presented the photo to the Hardyston Board of Education. The framed photo will be placed in the elementary school on Route 23, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Before 1958, elementary students attended two-room schools in the three sections of Hardyston; high school students attended Franklin or Hamburg High School. The photo was originally donated by member Shirley Masker Nauman, whose grandfather was one of the drivers on that route. The Heritage Society had the photo enlarged and framed. A similar photo at the Hardyston Middle school shows students being delivered to what was then the Hardyston School in Hamburg. Hamburg was set off from Hardyston in 1920. Hardyston School is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a variety of activities and projects, including a commemorative quilt, a cookbook, an oral history project, a 5K run. The ad-hoc committee is chaired by Board of Education member Anita Collins. Did you know?
