Journalist Barry to speak to Sussex Dems
Newton Jan Barry, award-winning author, poet, journalist, and a Veterans for Peace representative, will speak on issues affecting veterans at the Monday, Nov. 23 meeting of the Sussex County Democratic Committee, 7:30 P.M. at the Hampton Diner on Route 206. The meeting is open to the public. Barry is a Vietnam War veteran and co-founder of “Vietnam Veterans Against the War.” His poetry first appeared in “Winning Hearts and Minds: War Poems by Vietnam Veterans” and has been published in the Chicago Tribune, New York Times, and “A People and A Nation: A History of the United States.” Barry was profiled in the Cronkite production of “Choosing Sides: I Remember Vietnam,” which aired on The History Channel. He has presented poetry readings and observations on historic and current events at colleges, high schools, elementary schools, and community forums. During a journalism career that spanned a boyhood newspaper route, research for CBS News radio and television reports, and writing for weeklies, dailies, and national news publications, Barry conducted journalists’ workshops, taught journalism courses, and made guest college appearances. Barry is a recipient of a community service award from the Society of the Silurians, the oldest press club in the United States. He was a member of an investigative project team at The Record in Bergen County that received a Grantham Prize for Excellence in Reporting on the Environment; the IRE Medal, the Investigative Reporters and Editors’ top award; the Society of Professional Journalists’ Sigma Delta Chi Award for investigative reporting; and the New Jersey Press Association’s public service award.
