Eighth-graders at Sussex Middle School visited Lady Liberty and Ellis Island on May 14. They’d prepared for their trip by comparing and contrasting Emma Lazarus’ poem which includes “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free” with Neil Diamond’s song “We’re Coming to America.” The students then wrote their own poems and songs to parallel the comparisons made. America Has A Statue sing to the tune of “Mary Had a Little Lamb” By Amanda Pineda, Caitlin Pieri and Rebecca Tomczyk American has a Big statue Big statue Big statue America has a big statue That came all the way from France! It served as a sign of hope Sign of hope Sign of hope It served as a sign of hope For all the immigrants!
