Parenting classes

Parents, caregivers and educators are invited to learn practical strategies to address common parenting challenges by attending free in-person or online workshops and discussion groups hosted by Project Self-Sufficiency.

Workshops and discussion groups will help participants identify their parenting goals, address behavioral problems and promote healthy child development by using the Triple P Positive Parenting Program, a comprehensive education initiative for parents, health-care professionals, educators, and caregivers of infants, toddlers and school-age children.

A Positive Parenting Course will be held at 2 and 6 p.m. at Project Self-Sufficiency, 127 Mill St., Newton, and offered simultaneously online Aug. 21 and 28; and Sept. 2, 9, 16 and 23.

Pizza and child care will be available at all in-person sessions. Gift card incentives will be offered for attendance.

Day of Healing & Hope

The Sussex County Recovery Community Center presents “Remembrance and Recovery: A Day of Healing & Hope” on Thursday, Aug. 21.

An art exhibit will be on display from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Sussex County Community College’s Arbor Restaurant, 45 Main St., Newton. Refreshments provided by the Arbor Restaurant.

A remembrance display, with photos of those lost to substance and alcohol use disorder, will be open during the same hours on the Newton Green.

A memorial and a candlelight service is planned at 7:30 p.m. on the Green.

Information on recovery support, mental health and grief services, including how to get help, will be available.

Farmers’ and Crafters’ Market

The Sussex County Farmers’ and Crafters’ Market at the fairgrounds, 37 Plains Road, Augusta, will re-open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23 with a special performance of the Skylands Dulcimer Band.

Farm fresh eggs from Brodhecker Farm and honey will be available along with specialty baked goodies and breads from Daisy Fields Bakery and fresh veggies from Ideal Farms.

Also for sale are seasonally scented candles and hand-crafted goat soaps, jewelry, wooden artistic signage, hand-thrown pottery and other unique craft items.

Pupstock Festival

The 7th annual Pupstock Festival will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23 at the Sussex County Fairgrounds, 37 Plains Road, Augusta.

The event features live music by the Red Reyne Trio, Visitor Spot and Point Break; a puppy foam party, costume contest, peanut butter-eating contest and bubble bonanza.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children ages 5-13.

Byram Fest

Byram Fest will begin at4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23 at C.O. Johnson Field, 117 Roseville Road.

There will be live music, inflatable rides, a petting zoo, face painting and food trucks.

The event will end with fireworks.

Cornament in Sparta

The fifth annual Cornament, benefiting the Sparta Education Foundation, will be Sunday, Aug. 24 at Station Park, 100 Station Road, Sparta.

Check-in is from 9 to 9:30 a.m. and play begins at 10 a.m.

Preregistration is required. The cost is $70 for a team of two.

Hamburg Day

Hamburg Day will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24 at the Park and Recreation Fields, 60 Gingerbread Castle Road.

The free event will include live music and entertainment, a petting zoo, children’s activities, vendors and food.

Blood drive

Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 246 Woodport Road, Sparta, will host a community blood drive from 1 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28.

Lord’s Auction

The 78th annual Lord’s Auction will start at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30 at Tranquility United Methodist Church, at the corner of Kennedy Road and Route 517.

Proceeds will go toward renovation of the 222-year-old church and steeple reconstruction.

Among the items to be auctioned during the day are plants, baked goods, jelly, handmade woodwork items, original artwork, canned goods, fresh local produce and hand-painted items. The auction will be inside the church’s Community House.

Food, drink and ice cream will be available for purchase.

The event is rain or shine.
