The Awesome Alpaca Adventurers 4-H had a home made chocolate sale at the Wal-Mart in Newton on Sunday, Feb. 9 in hopes of trying to raise money for their upcoming trip to the Nationals in Harrisburg, Pa. later this year.

The Nationals make it to the East Coast every five years and usually are held in Colorado. The 4-H kids practice with their alpacas all year to train and expand their knowledge. At the Nationals they will be tested on their knowledge including being able to handle the alpaca on a lead in public and keep control while opening an umbrella, the agility course, their training, public relations, an obstacle course, and showmanship.

The event will last four days and there are nine children taking the trip. Ages are six to 17 to participate in the 4-H.

The two alpacas that visited Wal-Mart were Obsidian (the dark brown one) and Woody (the buff color). They drew a lot of attention from the customers coming and going. Alpacas should always be grouped with two or more together as it can be detrimental to them because of their herding instinct.
