HAMBURG — High Point Regional High School's Mike Derin won the 132-pound New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association Region I Wrestling Tournament on Friday, Feb. 28, and Saturday, March 1, at Wallkill Valley Regional High School.
Derin pinned Warren Hills' Max Nauta in 1:36 to claim the championship. He was named Region 1's Most Oustanding Wrestler.
Eleven Sussex County wrestlers placed in the top three of their respective weight classes and qualified for the NJSIAA Tournament at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City from March 7-9.
Pope John's Noa Merritt had a shot of going undefeated this season but was beaten by Warren Hill's Andrew Pacheco by decision, 5-2. Merritt's record is now 27-1-0. Despite the loss Merritt earned a silver medal at the tournament.
Sussex area wrestlers are: Pope John's Noa Merritt, Austin Sisco, Lenape Valley's D.J. Barrett, Newton's Gus Protogeropoulos, High Point's Jason Gaccione and Dom Gallo, Jefferson Townships, Luke Bohn, Kittatinnys Christian Silva, Austin Scrivani, Kieran Gerrity and Garrett Armstrong.
