Lounsberry Hollow students graduate from LEAD program
Vernon. Fifth graders at Lounsberry Hollow School completed a drug and violence prevention program run in partnership with Vernon police.
Lounsberry Hollow School celebrated the graduation of 190 fifth-grade students from the LEAD program, a drug and violence prevention curriculum taught in partnership with the Vernon Township Police Department.
The Law Enforcement Against Drugs and Violence program was integrated into health classes during the fall and winter and is designed to help students resist peer pressure and make healthy, drug-free choices. School officials said the ceremony highlighted both student achievement and the relationship between the district and local police.
Police Chief Dan Young was credited with supporting the partnership, which school leaders described as a key part of youth mentorship efforts in the township. Classes were led by Cpl. Palmisano and Cpl. Lenz, who worked with students for several months on lessons focused on safety, integrity and respect.
The ceremony also included recognition of LEAD essay contest winners Logan Muscarnero and Rylee DeValue, who were honored for essays promoting a safe and violence-free lifestyle.
School officials said graduates leave the program with skills and support intended to guide them as they move on to middle school.
