Vernon Township Council President Jean Murphy has announced her candidacy for mayor.

Murphy has served on the council for six years, the last three as council president. She also has served on the Land Use Board, Beautification Committee and as a liaison to the Board of Education. Murphy is also a member of the Sussex County Open Space Committee.

“For many years Vernon has had a lack of planning," Murphy said. "I would focus on being proactive instead of reactive to avoid unplanned spending. During my tenure in office the Council has been met with numerous road blocks because of the failure of administration to plan for the future. The time it takes to resolve these issues results in slow progress. However, we are at the point where all the hard work is becoming visible. Under the Council's guidance and my leadership we are finally coming together as a strong community where people are coming back to raise their families. We need to continue the upward progress to keep Vernon on the right track.”
