Murphy retires from sheriff’s office
NEWTON. He is a 25-year veteran of the Bureau of Corrections.

Cpl. Stephen Murphy is retiring from the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Corrections.
A 25-year veteran of the Bureau of Corrections, he was hired as a corrections officer in April 2000.
He is a graduate of Butler High School as well as the Passaic County Police Academy.
He was promoted to the rank of corporal in April 2015.
In 2017, he became the full-time lobby officer at the Keogh Dwyer Correctional Facility, where he checked in visitors and contractors and ensured that no contraband entered the facility.
Murphy received the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office Honorable Service Award in May 2001 after he and another officer stopped an inmate’s suicide attempt and provided medical care for the inmate.
He also received the Sheriff’s Achievement Award in March 2008 for his involvement in the jail attaining compliance with the New Jersey Department of Corrections annual inspection.
