Vernon, SCCC students win scholarships

    Eight Vernon students and three students attending Sussex County Community College (SCCC) have been awarded John Cocula Memorial Scholarships for 2024.

    The scholarships were $1,500 each.

    Isabella Bentancur, Pawel Drzymala, Hailey Handzo, Madison Hrebeniuk, Kathrine Ibrahim, Jordan Larosiliere, Sean Lee and Stav Saybe Mejia.

    The SCCC students awarded scholarships are Emma Redding, Zachary Redding and Arianna Frank.

    The John Cocula Memorial Scholarship Fund has awarded a total of more than $500,000 in scholarships to students in Vernon and Garfield and at SCCC.

    Funds for the scholarships are raised at the annual John Cocula Memorial Golf Outing, which was held last month at Black Bear Golf Club in Franklin.

    The scholarship fund was established to honor the legacy of John Cocula, a former teacher and coach in Garfield and a longtime resident of Vernon.

    Eligible students must be a resident of Vernon or Garfield and must attend an accredited higher education program or a student already attending SCCC. Selection criteria includes academic performance, letters of recommendation, participation in sports and a personal essay.
