The Vernon Township High School Full Orchestra, under the direction of Jennifer Krott, participated in its third annual side-by-side workshop with members of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra on Nov. 22. The students traveled to Sussex Tech, where they watched the NJSO perform a public concert.

After the concert,
Following the concert, the students rehearsed one of their own pieces, Tchaikovsky’s “Waltz from Sleeping Beauty,” with NJSO Maestro Jeffrey Grogan and members of the NJSO. The VTHS Orchestra will perform this piece as part of its spring concert line-up in May. The students sat next to a professional musician and discussing not only the piece that they were working on, but also specific performance aspects of their instrument.

"Working with Maestro Grogan and the NJSO is truly an incredible experience," Krott said. "It is wonderful to see the students actively engaged with the NJSO musicians and excited about learning new performance techniques. The students and I enjoy discussing what we’ve learned and are looking forward to implementing these strategies and techniques into our rehearsals. We thank the NJSO musicians, Maestro Grogan, NJSO liaison Shirley Chang, Vernon Music Teachers Max Taylor and Ryan Sweer, and Performing /Visual Arts Supervisor Rob Sears for helping to make our side-by-side collaboration a success.”
