Walnut Ridge holds mock election

The students of Walnut Ridge Primary School recently turned classroom lessons into a real-life experience.
Kindergarten and first-grade students learned about the job of the President of the United States, the White House, and the upcoming Presidential election. On Tuesday, Nov. 8, these students had some important “candidates” to vote for: favorite color, favorite song, and favorite movie. While voting for president is years away, this event enabled students to learn first-hand how the voting process works. Each grade had its own voting district or area where students signed in and placed their votes electronically via a Google Form in the computer lab and on Chromebooks. Polls were open throughout the school day.
Upon tallying the votes, the results were put into action.
On Nov. 9, the winning color red was worn by students and teachers alike; the winning song, “Can’t Stop this Feeling (Dance, Dance, Dance, Dance)” by Justin Timberlake, was played during lunch time; and the winning movie, “Space Buddies”, will be featured at School and Community Association sponsored Family Movie Night scheduled for early March.
Students learned that whether a candidate wins or loses, it is important to vote and that their vote counts.
