Prom fashion show 2009
High heels, hairspray and High Point High School, By Keri Rand Wantage Sequins, colored tuxedos and high heels dazzled the eighth annual Prom Fashion Show at High Point Regional High School on Friday, Feb. 20. The auditorium was filled with students who are starting preparation for one of high school’s most anticipated events, Prom. Patrons were greeted with a program, raffle ticket, mini prom style catalog and a coupon for Naetones Tuxedos. “This week was fashion week in New York City. This wasn’t something we planned, but it’s fashion week at High Point too!” said sophomore class advisor Art Mina as he opened the evening’s festivities. The fashion show was hosted by the sophomore class as a fundraiser. The fashion show began eight years ago and “has taken on a life of its own,” Mina said, “It has become one of our most popular events, second only to the spring musical.” Students emcees Lauren Bayse and Jeremy Quinn started the evening modeling ensembles from the night’s biggest sponsors, Donna’s Boutique in Hamburg and Naetones Tuxedos in Lafayette. Lauren was graceful in a pale blue, one shoulder strap long gown that fell delicately to the floor. Jeremy sported a classic black tuxedo with a playful pink tie. The fashion show showcased 42 female and 13 male junior and senior students as the models. Students coupled up as simulated prom dates. When they met at the center of the stage, they performed a silly action that always resulted in the female model receiving a carnation from the male model. But students were not the only ones to show talent for the runway strut. Four teachers also walked the catwalk. Well-coiffed, too The event featured prom hairdos as well. Six local hair salons showcased the latest in prom hairstyles. Participating salons were: Shear Expression of Newton, The Cutting Crew of Wantage, A New Look of Newton, Body and Soul of Hamburg, and Becky’s Hair Therapy of Wantage and The Cutting Crew of Newton. As the emcees began introducing the models and describing their outfits the crowd buzzed with admiration and critique. “The fashion show gives us the chance to see what kinds of dresses are out there, without having to go to lots of stores,” said Junior Katie Dispenziere. “It gives me an idea of what I want to wear.” When the show had come to a close, 16 door prizes were awarded to lucky raffle ticket holder. A chocolate and gift basket from The Chocolate Goat in Lafayette gift certificates from The Tannery in Sussex, Riviera Tan in Newton, Synergy Dance Company in Newton and VIP Nails in Sussex; a necklace set from Premier Designs in Wantage; men’s and women’s hair products from Head to Toe Salon in Hamburg, and Flowers by Kuperus.
