VERNON - With back pain second only to the common cold as the leading cause of lost work days for adults under the age of 45, its not surprising that there are more and more chiropractic offices opening up in the area, as people explore their options in their quest for relief from their aching backs. Roy Family Chiropractic is the new chiropractic practice of husband and wife team Drs. Stephane and Alison Roy, located in the Lakeland Bank building on Rt. 515 in Vernon. Stephane, who is originally from Montreal, Canada and Alison, who grew up in Paramus, both graduated form Texas Chiropractic College and this is their first practice. "We wanted to be close to family but not in a congested area, so Vernon seemed like the perfect place for us to open our practice," said Alison. The chiropractor treats the structure of the body, realigns the bones and improves people's posture, in the belief that if the structure of the body is correct its functioning will improve. "Many people are tired of living on drugs and pain killers, and when they come to the chiropractor they discover that we can usually get to the cause of their problem instead of just covering up effects of muscular skeletal problems with medicine," she added. The Roys said that, while many patients see improvement after only one visit, others may need a series of treatments. Some who have found relief choose to stay in treatment for preventative care. One such person is Ruth Fisher, interviewed at the Roys' office. "I come in for adjustments when my back gets out of alignment and it makes me feel more flexible and agile," she said in explaining why she comes back. According to the American Academy of Chiropractic Surgeons (AAOS), four out of five Americans will have significant back pain at some point in their life, so it stands to reason that more and more people will look to an alternative to medication and look to preventative measures offered by the chiropractor. "Everyone can benefit from chiropractic measures, from babies to the elderly," said Allison. "To date we have not done a good job of educating people about spinal decay. Everyone should get checked out to make sure that that their spine is functioning properly." For more information, call 973-764-1555 or visit royfamilychiropractic.com.
