Second-graders: Get free ski or snowboard lessons

VERNON Mountain Creek is offering second-graders an opportunity to learn skiing and snowboarding for free. “Skiing and snowboarding are such great lifetime sports; many of us here have built our lives around it” said Bill Benneyan at Mountain Creek. “It’s an exhilarating and social way to enjoy winter outdoors, and is fulfilling in constantly providing new goals and learning along the way - disguised as fun. We believe that anyone who’s fortunate enough to live near a snow resort like here in Vernon should take advantage of it.” The idea, said officials, is to get local kids started early, where they can grow into and learn a sport “that their community supports.” “Second-grade, or roughly 8 years old, is a good time to start, though we often get new skiers as young as four,” said Chris Heidebrecht, head of resort operations. “ We’re always very excited to open for a new season, and want to share that with the community. If a child already knows how to ski or snowboard, we’ve given then an invitation’ to get a parent into the sport with them.” Notices to all Vernon second-graders were distributed at schools before the Thanksgiving break. Reservations will be taken through Dec. 24 and include free rental equipment. For more information, call Mountain Creek at 973-864-8128.
