Campus and monument are the site of moving ceremonies, By Jennnifer Jean Miller Newton — Hundreds of county residents attended the Sept. 11 Remembrance Ceremony held Sunday at the September 11th Memorial at Sussex County Community College. Representatives from the police, fire, EMS and military, as well as civilians, were guest speakers, sang and laid wreaths in honor of those who died on Sept. 11, 2001 in the terrorist attacks. Members of area Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance and Police Pipes and Drums of Morris County played “Amazing Grace” as well as recessional music. Detective Will Jimeno, a retired officer for the Port Authority police, was one of two surviving police officers trapped under rubble for 13 hours beneath the concourse of the twin towers. Jimeno, who was intended to be the keynote speaker on Sunday, was unable to attend due to health reasons. Jimeno saw a low flying plane while on patrol; he was portrayed in the film “World Trade Center” by actor Michael Pe-a. “We hope the community will come out and visit the memorial this week in remembrance...to say prayers and see the wreaths,” said Kathleen Scott, executive director of Public Information and Marketing at Sussex County Community College. “This is our seventh year hosting this on the campus and we are proud to serve the area in this capacity,” she said.
