Special Olympics athletes from Morris, Sussex and Warren counties showed their talent and skill on the hardwood at the Area 3 Special Olympics Basketball Skills MEET Feb. 9 at the Alfred C. MacKinnon Middle School in Wharton.

The event was coordinated by David Gould of Denville and Eileen Griffiths of Newton. Dover Area Special Olympics NJ volunteers, under Gould’s leadership, enthusiastically cheered on the athletes.

Sue Johnston, a school counselor with the Wharton school district, helped arrange for the venue for this special event. The mission of the Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for all children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
