Baseball team wins 6 in a row

The Vernon Township High School baseball team posted its sixth straight victory - a 3-2 decision over Hackettstown - there on Thursday, April 27.

Derek Lazier went 2-for-3 with a triple, a walk, two RBI and a run; Jake Klein added three singles and an RBI; and Roberth Nathan and Michael Pecoraro combined on a six-hitter.

Vernon, which improved to a 9-2 record with the victory, struck for all three of its runs in the top of the third inning.

Nathan started the game and allowed two earned runs, six hits and three walks while striking out 11 in a 113-pitch effort during the first 6.1 innings. Pecoraro, who walked two, got the final two outs to earn the save.

Vernon was tabbed the fifth seed for the 13th Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament and received a bye into the second round. It will play host to 12th-seeded Newton or 17th-seeded Sussex Tech on Saturday, May 6.

Softball

Vernon took a season-high three-game winning streak into play this week after defeating Hackettstown, 7-5, in eight innings on the road April 27.

The Vikings trailed, 5-2, before scoring three times in the top of the sixth to knot the score, 5-5. They then scored twice in the top of the eighth to earn the win.

Maryanna Cova-Gomez was 3-for-4 with three runs; Jessica LeFort went 3-for-4 with an RBI; Leigh Rose Hart was 2-for-4 with a run; and Carly Amorosi added two singles and a run to pace the offense.

Hart also earned the win in the circle, scattering five hits and two walks while striking out six.

Vernon (5-6) was tabbed the 14th seed for the H/W/S Tournament and was slated to play host to 15th-seeded Kittatinny on Wednesday, May 3. The winner would play at third-seeded Sparta in the second round May 6.

Boys lacrosse

Vernon was seeded fifth in the 15-team field of the H/W/S Tournament and received a bye into the quarterfinal round, where it was scheduled to play at fourth-seeded Sparta on May 6.

The Vikings (4-5) have been led this season by Kane Lynch (14 goals, 14 assists), Connor Sensbach (six goals, 12 assists), Ty Holden (eight goals, three assists), Gage Moskovitz (nine goals, five assists) and Aidan Duffy (13 goals, two assists).

Girls lacrosse

The Vikings were seeded sixth for the H/W/S Tournament and were slated to play host to 11th-seeded Pope John in a second-round game on Tuesday, May 2.

A win there, and Vernon would advance to the quarterfinal round against third-seeded Sparta on May 6.

Vernon (3-5) scored a season-high 15 goals in a 15-4 victory over Whippany Park on April 24 at home. The team was led by Lexi Moskovitz (four goals), Sidney Van Tassel (four goals, two assists), Colleen Fraser (two goals, four assists), Makenna Thomas (two goals), Lauren Waschek (two goals), Abby Bonnema (one goal, one assist) and goalie Abby Sokolewicz (three saves).

Boys volleyball

Vernon (7-4) had its season-high three-game winning streak snapped April 27 in a 25-14, 22-25, 25-22 loss at Bergenfield.

The Vikings were led by Pearse Esposito (23 assists, five digs, one ace), Victor Silva (three kills), Ben Jurewicz (eight kills, four digs, one ace), Tristan Santiago (21 digs), Logan Peek (seven digs, one ace), Caden Krzyzak (four kills, one dig), Josh Jean (six kills, eight digs, two blocks), Juan Rico (seven digs, three kills, one ace) and Jon Chromcik (one kill).
