Girls volleyball team beats High Point

The Vernon Township High School girls volleyball team snapped its four-match losing streak in style, posting a straight set victory over High Point at home Friday afternoon, Sept. 22.

The Vikings, who earned a 25-20, 27-25 decision, were led by Gabi Sierpinski (five kills), Arianna Frank (three kills, three digs, one assist), Madison Andriola (10 digs, four aces, one assist, one kill), Kaitlyn White (two kills, two digs, one ace), Abby Sokolewicz (four kills, one block, one dig), Kaylie Orlando (14 assists, eight digs), Alexa Gentile (six digs, one ace, one kill), Shelby Caltabilotta (one dig), Elizabeth Peek (six digs) and Miranda Ebbighausen (one dig, one ace).

Vernon (2-5) will play host to Morris Tech at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29.

Girls soccer

Monica Curry scored twice, including the game-tying goal in the 67th minute, as Vernon overcame a three-goal halftime deficit and earned a 5-5 tie with Warren Hills on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 23 in Washington Township.

Grace Dobrzynski also scored two goals for Vernon, which trailed, 4-1, at the half.

Curry now has 23 goals and six assists, with Dobrzynski adding five goals.

Vernon (7-0-1) is slated to play at North Warren at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28.

Boys soccer

Vernon dropped a 4-1 decision to undefeated Hackettstown on Monday, Sept. 18 at home.

Zack Mountain scored the lone goal of the game off a feed from Tyler Heykoop as the game was knotted, 1-1, at the half. Hackettstown (6-0) then scored three second-half goals.

Mountain leads the Vikings with four goals and an assist.

Vernon (0-6-1) will play host to North Warren at 4 p.m. Sept. 28.

Field hockey

The Vikings ran their winning streak to four, with three wins last week.

In its most recent decision, Vernon rolled to an 8-1 victory over High Point on Sept. 23 at home.

Abigail DeYoung scored three times; Bailey Mann totaled two goals and two assists; Sidney Van Tassel added two goals; and Makenna Thomas also scored.

Vernon (5-1) will play host to Pompton Lakes at 4 p.m. Sept. 29.

Girls tennis

The Vikings won their third straight match with a 4-1 victory over Wallkill Valley on Wednesday, Sept. 20 at home.

Winners for Vernon included Samantha Werner (second singles), Karolina Czerhoniak (third singles), Nicole Charuka and Kaymenia O’Brien (first doubles), and Brooke Giessuebel and Emily Minteer (second doubles), who each won in straight sets.

Vernon (3-1) is scheduled to play at Newton at 4 p.m. Sept. 28.
