Hand them the heisman

SUSSEX COUNTY-Matt Junior and Kira Grant, seniors at Kittatinny Regional High School, have been nominated for the Wendy's High School Heisman Award. Awarded in conjunction with the collegiate Heisman recognition, this award honors the nation's top high school seniors who best exemplify a supreme "citizen-scholar-athlete." These two students were nominated by Kittatinny Principal Susan Kappler for their academic aptitude, athletic talent and display of commitment to their communities. Kira Grant has a deep personal commitment at Kittatinny. She is vice-president of both her senior class and the National Honor Society. She has been a member of the steering committee for the Peer Leadership program for three years and a member of the Student Council for four years. She is also a member of Kittatinny's Mock Trial Team. In sports, she has participated in Track and Tennis and is currently the captain of the girls varsity tennis team. Grant has participated in Kittatinny's Peer Tutoring, Crossage Training, K3D and Summer Training Camp. In her community, she is an active volunteer for the Hampton Rotary, United Way, Manna House, Senior Citizen Outreach, the youth council at her church, and has participated in several clothing drives for needy children. Matt Junior is equally committed at Kittatinny, which includes membership in the National Honor Society, Technology Students Association (TSA), Peer Leadership, Student Council, and Endurance & Triumph. He participates in three school sports: baseball, soccer and wrestling. Junior's wrestling honors include First Team All-League and First Team All-Area, a SCIL Academic Athlete Achievement Award, a District 3 Tournament Championship, and fourth place in the Region 1 Tournament. He received the Baseball Coach's Award last year. He is actively involved with his community through volunteer work with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the Church Confirmation Program, and the Little League Umpire program. "These students are truly in a league of their own" says Archie Griffin, the only two-time winner of the prestigious Heisman Memorial Trophy and program spokesperson. "Each student nominated for the award has gone above and beyond expectations to help those in need, enhance their education and pursue their dreams." Twelve national finalists are invited for an all-expense paid trip to New York City on December 10-12 to participate in the Heisman weekend festivities. ESPN2 will feature all 12 finalists during the Wendy's High School Heisman Awards Ceremony, scheduled to air on Dec. 12.
