Local club team enjoys great run

The North Jersey Nitros travel baseball team, comprised of high school freshmen and sophomores from Vernon and Sparta Townships, defeated the North Rockland Bulldogs of West Haverstraw, NY (8-0) on July 18 to win the spring 2013 High School (18U) Cerbo Travel League.

Earlier playoff wins included a 13-1 quarterfinal win over the Jefferson Lightning, a 10-2 semifinal win over the North Jersey Bruins, and a 1-0 division championship win over the Vernon Crush in 10 innings.

Earlier this spring, the Nitros won the Hackensack Memorial Day Weekend tournament (15U division) for the third consecutive year while posting a cumulative tournament record of 15-0, the first time any team has won back to back to back championships in Hackensack tournament history.

Moreover, since the Nitros began playing in September 2010, they have posted an overall record — through spring, summer, fall league and tournament play — of 136 wins and just 19 losses.

Next up for the Nitros will be a tournament at Sports at the Beach in Rehoboth Beach, DE from Aug. 9-11, 2013.

This will be the third consecutive year that the Nitros have earned an automatic berth to play at Sports at the Beach.
