Miller Bros. hosts seminar, BBQ

SPARTA – Miller Brothers MMA & Fitness played host to its 3rd-Annual Charity Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Seminar and BBQ on Saturday and the day was a resounding success.
The event, which included a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) seminar featuring six BJJ Black Belts, a promotion ceremony for the gym’s students and an outdoor BBQ, was free to attend with a request to donate-what-you-can to a fundraiser for the Global Lyme Alliance (GLA). The GLA is an organization dedicated to finding a reliable test, and a cure, for Lyme Disease, and more than $1,300 was raised for the organization. Students in attendance received instruction from three of the gym’s five Black Belt BJJ instructors, as well as Jamie Cruz and Joseph Campisi of Renzo Gracie Woodland Park and Jon Finn of Birdman BJJ in Brooklyn.
Following the seminar students in Miller Brothers MMA’s BJJ program participated in a promotion ceremony which saw six students earn stripes and six students promoted to new belts. The promotions included: Meliza Guzman, Kevin Johnson and Justin Zinn, White Belt First Stripe; Francis DeNapoli, White Belt Second Stripe; Sorkristal Alequin, Ray Carroll, Bill Cowan and Anthony Guzman, promoted to Blue Belt; Tyler Bayer, Blue Belt Third Stripe; Nick Bayconich, promoted to Purple Belt; Fred Hooey, Purple Belt Fourth Stripe.
The promotions were capped off by the awarding of instructor Preston Gagg’s Black Belt. Gagg has studied BJJ for 15 years, including owning his own school, Top Control Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The promotion to Black Belt was just the second Black Belt promotion by Miller Brothers MMA’s head BJJ Professor Sean Santella, following the promotion of coach Mike Pagano in June.
