Sudden death needed to crown Employee Cup champ

For the first time in the 18-year history of the Crystal Springs Employee Cup Championship — held on Wednesday, Nov. 5 — a playoff was required between the last year’s winner Team Ballyowen, Team Great Gorge and Team Black Bear.

In the end, Team Ballyowen won the championship.

Each carded an identical 19 under par score at the end of regulation play. The 2014 18th Champion was determined by a sudden death playoff which followed a scramble format played by two golfers from each team. To make the playoff even more interesting the day was rapidly being taken over by darkness with the final chip off of the playoff completed in almost total darkness.

Following the first playoff hole played on the Ballyowen 18th hole, the three teams remained tied, each team having parred the hole. The 2014 18th Employee Cup Champion would be determined by a dramatic chip off.

The winning chip shot by Jamie Connelly, executed in almost total darkness, electrified the huge gallery by hitting the flagstick and landing 5 inches from the hole to secure a hard-earned victory for Team Ballyowen.
