Turner sets hammer throw record for NJIT

Shannon Turner (Vernon high School) was a junior competitor in throwing events for the New Jersey Institute of Technology’s (Newark) women’s track and field team this past season. Turner, listed as a Chemical Engineering major earned a place on the ASUN Outdoor Track and Field All-Academic Team. Turner also earned a place on the Eastern College Athletic Conference Winter/Spring Academic Presidents Honor Roll. She currently holds the NJIT record for distance in the hammer throw event.
The Highlanders place sixth as a team at the ASUN Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Jacksonville, Florida.
Samantha Drew and McKenzie Alter, both graduates of Vernon High School were members of the Kean University (Union, NJ) women’s lacrosse team this year. Drew, a sophomore goal keeper played in two games for Kean. Alter, a freshman who played attack competed in nine games and scored four goals and had an assist for the Cougars.
The Cougars posted an overall record of 14-4 and they were 7-2 on their home field. In the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) they went 3-3. They advanced to the NJAC Tournament where they were defeated in the semifinals by The College of New Jersey in a contest played in Ewing. Drew, listed as an Athletic Training major earned a place on the NJAC All-Academic Team.
Thomas Brennan (Vernon High School) was a freshman on the roster for the Kean University men’ lacrosse team this spring. Brennan played in eight games and started in three of them for Kean.
The Cougars went 12-6 overall and they were 8-2 on their home field. They reached the Eastern College Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal round where they were defeated by Stockton University in a game held in Allentown, Pa.
Chandler VanDerBeek (High Point High School) was a senior midfielder for the Monmouth University (West Long Branch, NJ) men’s lacrosse program this spring. VanDerBeek, listed as a Business Administration major competed in all 15 games for Monmouth and recorded three goals and two assists.
The Hawks tallied an overall record of 7-8 with a mark of 4-2 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). The advanced to the MAAC Tournament where they lost to Detroit Mercy in a semifinal round game held in West Long Branch.
