Vernon 6th-grade girls have 2-2 record
VERNON — The Vernon girls sixth-grade travel basketball team has a 2-2 record after its first four games.
Vernon lost its first game to a tough Newton squad, 44-12, at Green Hills School. Vernon was led by guard's Victoria Grifone's eight points with guard Kaitlyn Buurman and forward Larissa Trongone scoring two points apiece.
Vernon bounced back in a tremendous way winning the next two games against the Hopatcong Chiefs. Vernon won the first game, 34-12, at Hopatcong High School. Vernon was led by forward Hailey Debonta and guard Victoria Grifone who both scored 10 points each. Guard Kaitlyn Buurman scored eight points, forward Larissa Trongone, guard Oliva Amorosi and center Oliva Vizzini had two points each. In the rematch, Vernon defeated Hopatcong in Vernon, 31-7. Vernon center Oliva Vizzini broke out with a 13-point domination in the paint against the Hopatcong interior defense. Contributing to the victory were forward Hailey Debonta and guard Victoria Grifone with six points each, guard Kaitlyn Buurman, guard Tara Waldron and center Yadira Garcia with two points each.
In the fourth game of the season Vernon played a formidable Sparta team in Vernon and put up a tough battle, but in the end Sparta prevailed in a big way winning the game, 32-5. Vernon was led by Vernon guard Victoria Grifone's three points and forward Hailey Debonta's two points.
