Vernon wrestlers rolling into February
VERNON — There are so many techniques, many of which go unnoticed by those who don’t have an intimate knowledge of wrestling, that it takes for someone to be a success on the mat.
Bill Panfile, the head coach of the Vernon High School wrestling team, is well aware of all of the attributes, such as mental and physical toughness, outstanding cardiovascular conditioning, as well as strong technique that it takes to be a successful wrestler.
In terms of the goals that he’d like to see his student-athletes achieve this winter, Panfile has a simple approach to the season.
“Get better every time we go out on the mat, be accountable and responsible and have pride in everything we do,’’ Panfile said.
Pat Thompson, a senior competing in the 182-pound weight class, has the qualities that Panfile is looking for in a competitor. Through January 25 Thompson had an individual record of 10-6.
“[He shows] leadership in the wrestling room and on the mat [during meets]," Panfile said. “Hard work, persistence, reliability and responsibility [are some of his attributes as a wrestler]."
Panfile mentioned Sidney Holt (junior, 145 pounds) and Cole Nagle (sophomore, 138 pounds) as two wrestlers who have consistently improved from the very first day of practice to this point of the season.
“Nagle improved with his work in the practice room and skills on the mat," Panfile said. “Holt works hard day in and day out and has improved on the mat.’’
Panfile also has noticed the way his team has gotten better as this season has progressed. Some of the other wrestlers having fine seasons for the Vikings include Tim Van Lenten (sophomore, 152 pounds), Robert Chavez (senior, 285 pounds) and Jesse Cornwell (senior, 220 pounds). As of Jan. 25, Van Lenten had a record of 11-2, Chavez had a record of 9-6 and Cornwell had a record of 10-4.
Through Jan. 25, the Vikings had four dual-meet wins, including three victories in a row on Jan. 4. Vernon has consecutive home matches versus Morris Hills and Pompton Lakes on January 29 and January 31, respectively. Vernon is scheduled to begin the month of February with a road match at North Warren on February 1.
“[The team has improved with] overall mat awareness, perfecting simple key moves and with personal and team victories," Panfile said.
