Hardyston — Free membership to the Y for the school year is being offered to seventh-graders from all over Sussex County. As a requirement, students are asked to come to the Teen Training Workshop held on Sundays from 1 to 3 p.m. Students, accompanied by a parent or guardian, can join in person at the Y’s Welcome Center located at 15 Wits End Road in Hardyston anytime with proof of seventh grade level such as previous semester’s report card, yearbook, student identification card, etc. This special membership is valid until Aug. 30, 2011. Seventh-graders get full use of the Y’s pool during open-swim sessions, use of the fitness equipment in the Wellness Center after completing workshop, selected exercise classes designed for teens and free enrollment in the American Red Cross Guard Start program for aspiring future lifeguards. New session begins Saturday, Nov. 13 from noon to 1 p.m. Parents can drop off their seventh-graders for the programs specifically supervised by trained YMCA staff members. However, for open use of the pool and Wellness Center, parents are required to remain in the building. The seventh-grade membership will also allow students to enroll in other Y programs at the reduced member rate including the American Red Cross Babysitter’s Training Program scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 13 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This training is appropriate for ages 11 through 14 at a cost of $60 for members and $90 for non-members. “National research has shown that seventh-grade is an important time for children to be physically active and gain lifelong fitness and nutrition habits that will carry into adulthood,” says YMCA Senior Program Director Rebecca Carlson. “Studies also show that children ages 12 and 13 are the most impressionable and most at risk for dangers in their community. At the Sussex County Y, we are pleased to offer this opportunity and support these young, confident and responsible future leaders.”
