On Jan. 12, Cara Beirne, 21, a resident of Franklin, and Kristen Daly, 20, a resident of Hamburg, were arrested at Vernon Police Department. Both girls were employed by Verizon Wireless, with store locations of Vernon, Franklin, West Milford, Newton and Warwick N.Y. The investigation started when a customer had questioned the payment made to his bill. Investigation revealed a scam where Beirne and Daly would take cash payment from customers for their accounts, enter the true amount received to Verizon but would register a different amount received for the store and then pocket the cash. The customer’s accounts with Verizon were being paid in full but the store lost an estimated $16,000 cash. Both Beirne and Daly were charged with third-degree theft and were released pending court. Investigated by Detectives Brian Jernick and Zabriskie.
