Scouts help Squad with fundraiser to benefit poor abroad and the local first aiders, By John Church Ogdensburg Closets in the area have a little more room inside after Saturday’s fundraising clothing drive run by the Ogdensburg First Aid Squad. “We are pleased with the turnout,” said event chairwoman Stephanie Bavaro. “This fundraiser benefits the squad,” she said. “The benefits are local and also a long ways away, as people globally benefit from the donated clothing.” By the 1 p.m. close of the event, over 10,000 pounds of clothing and other items almost completely filled a medium-sized truck. The donated items are to be sold by the squad to Turnkey Enterprises at a rate of nine cents a pound. The clothing and other items donated will not be turned into rags. “We ship the items to a facility in Port Reading were they are inspected and sorted into categories appropriate to the climate of the destination country,” said Tom Ferreby of Turnkey Enterprises. The sorting avoids needlessly shipping winter coats to tropical countries and summer clothing to colder regions. Helping to unload the items from arriving vehicles were six members of the Sterling/Mohawk Daisy Scouts doing community service.
