Y offers recess for home-schoolers

Hardyston — The Sussex County YMCA is running a twice monthly “recess” program for home-schooled families in northern New Jersey on the second and fourth Thursday of each month, from 1 to 2 p.m. Swimming, organized pool games and the use of the YMCA’s playground and picnic area are offered at a cost of $5 per person or $15 per family for non-members. It is free to Y members. “Our area has a large network of home-schooled families,” said Rebecca Carlson, YMCA’s aquatics director and coordinator of the program. “Today there is more information and support for these families and statistics say home-schooling is on the rise.” With that in mind, the Y wants to be “a resource for these parents who balance their children’s studies, recreation and social time. The program started in the fall,” Carlson noted, “and we continue to add more participants.” A similar program called a moms club is offered for mothers with pre-schoolers on the first and third Thursday of each month.
