Murphy's misinformation

This letter is a response to a letter to the editor, published in the Sept. 21-27, 2017, edition of the Advertiser-News, entitled “Sewer Expansion Endorsement,” by Jean Murphy. Ms. Murphy’s letter seems to have been written with the sole intent to wield personal attacks.
As campaign manager for Sally Rinker, a candidate in the Nov. 7 election for a seat on Vernon’s Council, I need to set the record straight regarding misinformation in Murphy’s letter. Ms. Murphy blames Rinker for supporting Resolutions regarding a plan amendment to the Vernon Wastewater Management Plan, in essence, an expansion of Vernon’s sewer district. I find this allegation extremely problematic, as both resolutions were voted on in 2015 and 2017 and Rinker was last in office in 2011. In fact, at approximately one hour into the recording of the
Dec. 14, 2015, Vernon Council meeting, available on the Vernon Taxpayers Association website, Ms. Murphy can be heard, not only describing her support for the sewer expansion resolution, but actually voting “yes” to the same Resolution. Last week, her published statement in her letter to the editor was entirely “topsy-turvy,” where in reality, she’s the one who can be heard endorsing the Resolution.
Sally Rinker’s opinion regarding Vernon’s sewer district expansion is multi-faceted, just as the issue requires. On the Jan. 25, 2016, Vernon Council meeting recording, Rinker speaks at the podium as a member of the public. She declares her disagreement with the content of the resolution that pertains to failed septic systems and asks the Council to rescind it. This wasn’t a reflection of Rinker’s opinion as to whether the sewer district should be expanded or not. Ms. Murphy’s subsequent votes on the Resolution were “suspend” and “abstain.” She never voted "no".
There is also Ms. Murphy’s false accusation that Rinker supports the interests of Mt. Creek over those of Vernon residents. What vote or contract can Ms. Murphy point to, to justify this allegation? It would be shameful if her desire to win re-election this November outweighs the need for truthful and transparent information for the public.
On behalf of Sally, I caution residents and taxpayers to be vigilant when a candidate defines other candidates with false narratives. If a campaign consists only of personal attacks, there may be little substance to the candidate’s own accomplishments. Sally has many solid ideas about lowering Vernon taxes, promoting transparency in our government, and, above all, has the character not to waste your time or hers engaging in personal attacks.
