Referendum on nursing homes is probably illegal

    To the Editor:

The Sussex County Board of Commissioners recently passed a resolution requesting a voter referendum on conducting an investigation into the government’s handling of the Andover Subacute Center and other nursing homes.

There’s just one problem: the referendum is probably illegal.

A county board has no authority to investigate the state government. If they want to look into Andover Subacute, well, they don’t need a referendum to do that. But don’t insult our intelligence, Commissioners. Given the extreme partisanship demonstrated by Dawn Fantasia and her cronies on the board, we all know that any “investigation” will be a partisan witch hunt to see how much they and their attack dogs can dump in Governor Murphy’s lap. “Independent and bipartisan”? Hah!

And, as was pointed out in the story, an investigation is already underway. Empowered by the state, who has the proper authority. Because of this, I have contacted the Attorney General’s office requesting a review of this improper referendum.
