Everyone knows that this July 4, 2026, will be the 250th birthday of our country. Across America, cities and towns have been making plans to celebrate this historical milestone. Many of those communities have already had events and programs to honor The Semiquincentennial.
Vernon’s Historic Preservation Committee is no longer meeting, and it’s too bad. I think in this situation, the council and mayor need to put a line item in our new budget to set some money aside for a 250th Ad Hoc Committee for our town. We should plan for ”something,” and it doesn’t have to cost a lot of money.
I am sure that some people might be willing to volunteer for this committee. History buffs, artists, musicians, and other craftsmen could meet in the hope that we can come up with some special ideas. It will take residents who could put aside their personal grievances and political differences to get the job done.
I will be asking the mayor and council to consider appointing an ad hoc Committee because we deserve to celebrate!
