What Sussex Borough has accomplished

As I end my term as mayor of Sussex Borough, I am filled with a profound sense of gratitude and humility. It has been an honor to serve Sussex Borough, a community that I hold dear to my heart.

As I bid farewell, I would like to take a moment to reflect on our journey together.

In 2008, I embarked on my public service journey with my appointment to the Sussex Wantage Consolidation Study. It was a challenging yet rewarding experience that accelerated my learning curve about the challenges facing Sussex Borough.

I had the privilege of serving Sussex Borough for the past 15 years as a council member and later as mayor. During my tenure, we made significant strides in improving our borough. We saw the establishment of a new playground, providing a safe and fun environment for our children to grow and play.

We welcomed the Norwescap Sussex Borough Community and Cultural Center, a beacon of hope and support for our community members. The center hosts many community and cultural events. In addition, it houses the Entrepreneurial Center and Harvest House.

Working with Norwescap, we implemented the Neighborhood Revitalization Tax Credit Program, providing much-needed relief and support to our residents and small-business owners alike.

In collaboration with the New Jersey Local Planning Services, we developed an economic development element for Sussex Borough’s Master Plan. This strategic initiative will be instrumental in driving economic growth and prosperity in our borough.

A part of the plan was used to secure a streetscape grant from the state Department of Transportation (DOT). The grant will improve pedestrian safety along Walling Avenue. It will add sidewalks from Loomis Avenue to the ShopRite along with lighting and other safety features.

One of our notable achievements was the opening of the new ShopRite in Sussex Borough. This not only created jobs but also provided our residents with a convenient shopping destination. It is the centerpiece of our revitalization efforts.

Looking ahead, we embarked on an ambitious plan to revitalize Main Street. The final approval from the state DOT is pending. We have plans and grants to improve municipal parking.

We secured grants for the Sussex Borough sewer and water utilities. Work has been completed on the sewer force main along Route 23. Grants are also in place for the improvements to our water treatment plant and source water.

We have plans to improve Brookside Park. New pavement and guiderails on Brookside Avenue are nearly complete. Developers have purchased the Fountain Square Inn and have plan approval to redevelop the site. These projects promise to further enhance the beauty and functionality of our borough.

I am proud of what we have accomplished together, but I also know there is more work to be done. I am confident that our community will continue to thrive and prosper under the new leadership. I urge you all to stay involved and engaged in our community affairs. Your voice and participation matter.

I would like to thank my family, friends and colleagues for their love and support throughout my public service career. You have been my source of strength and inspiration. I could not have done it without you.

As I leave office, I want you to know I will always cherish the memories and the friendships that I have made during my years of service. You will always have a special place in my heart. I look forward to seeing you around town.

Thank you, Sussex Borough, for everything you have given me. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to serve you as your mayor.

    Edward J. Meyer
